As New England is in the mist of another "Noreaster", this is a good time to think about exercise and SAFETY!
Before else added understand the following: Do NOT SHOWEL cold wet snow if aging or have had history of asthma, heart disesase.
In cold weather our hearts compensate for the temperatures by beating faster in attempt to keep body warm, as the heart beats faster more oxygen is required to do this. Individuals with narrowed arteries are not able to provide oxygen rich blood to the heart muscle, therefore experience angina and those with critically narrowed arteries set themselves at higher risk for heart attacks.
The cold causes vasospasms and bronchospasms, individuals with asthma experience shortness of breath by being out in cold windy enviroments even without doing any activity.
If one must be out in the this weather: dress with layered clothing, protect nose and mouth, and PLEASE DO NOT showel snow.
Often individuals are not aware of their cardiac status, heart attacks happen suddently for the above mentioned resons.
If one wishes to continue safe activity, do it indoors or at a gym after a physisican has approved the program.
